Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet is a prescription medicine that belongs to a class of drugs called immunosuppressants. It is used to prevent organ rejection in people who have received a liver, kidney, heart, or bone marrow transplant. It is also used to treat severe cases of rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis.

How does it work?

Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet works by weakening the immune system to help your body accept the new organ as if it were your own (in the case of an organ transplant) and to prevent further damage to your joints (in the case of rheumatoid arthritis) or skin (in the case of psoriasis). It does this by blocking the activity of certain white blood cells (T cells) that are involved in the immune response.

What are the side effects?

Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet may cause some common side effects such as headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain or upset, acne, cramps, increased hair growth on the face/body, shaking fingers/hands (tremor), muscle spasm, numbness or tingly feeling, swollen/red/painful gums, dizziness, flushing, and high blood pressure. These side effects are usually mild and may go away with time or with dose adjustment.

However, Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet may also cause some serious side effects that require immediate medical attention. These include signs of infection such as fever, sore throat, flu-like symptoms, or painful urination; signs of cancer such as unusual skin changes, change in appearance or size of moles, unusual weight loss, swollen lymph glands, unusual lumps, night sweats; signs of eye problems such as sudden vision loss, blurred vision, tunnel vision, eye pain or swelling, or seeing halos around lights; signs of heart problems such as fast, irregular, or pounding heartbeats; fluttering in your chest; shortness of breath; and sudden dizziness, lightheadedness, or passing out; signs of brain problems such as severe headache, confusion, slurred speech, arm or leg weakness, trouble walking, loss of coordination, feeling unsteady; signs of muscle problems such as very stiff muscles, high fever, profuse sweating, or tremors.

What are the indications?

Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet is indicated for the following conditions:

Prevention of organ rejection in patients receiving allogeneic liver transplants
Prevention of organ rejection in patients receiving allogeneic kidney transplants
Prevention of organ rejection in patients receiving cardiac transplants
Treatment of patients with severe active rheumatoid arthritis who have had an inadequate response to methotrexate
Treatment of adult nonimmunocompromised patients with severe recalcitrant plaque psoriasis who have failed to respond to at least one systemic therapy
What are the contra indications?

Neoral 25mg (Cyclosporine) tablet is contra indicated in the following situations:

Hypersensitivity to cyclosporine or any of its ingredients
Rheumatoid arthritis patients with abnormal renal function
Pregnancy and lactation unless the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus or infant
Concomitant use with certain drugs that may increase cyclosporine levels or toxicity such as ketoconazole , erythromycin , amiodarone , verapamil , diltiazem , grapefruit juice , etc.
Concomitant use with certain drugs that may decrease cyclosporine levels or efficacy such as rifampin , phenytoin , carbamazepine , phenobarbital , St. John’s wort , etc.
